Political

The Islamisation of Society – In the two decades following the end of the World War II , many Middle Eastern and traditionally Islamic countries saw westernisation occur whereby their governments encouraged the adoption of western values, especially in the political arena, in part due to furhter courtship of potential allies by the United States in the beginning of the Cold War. Since the 1970s however, people living in these nations have begun to resist the percieved movement towards western lifestyles and instead have become more entrenched in their islamic faith. Both the developement of a sense of a universal muslim identity shared by those living in historically islamic countries and migrants living in the West, Europe in particular; and the lack of assimilation into wider society by the latter group has drawn concern that this process is creating resentment, racial tensions and breeding grounds for terrorists especially with the rapid growth of supranational terrorist networks. What should the international community’s response be to this?

Spreading Democracy relies on the assumption that a liberal democracy is the best form of government and may be considered so from a foreign policy perspective because of the views advocated in the Democratic Peace Theory, which in simple terms is based on the empirical statement that liberal democracies never, or extremely rarely, fight each other. In recent years, it has most often manifested itself in a neoconservative foreign policy, with both former Prime Minister Tony Blair and former President George W Bush stating their belief in democratic peace. The main debate centres around the question which ask if it is right to spread democracy. Where does you country stand on this issue?

Enhanced Interrogation Technique such as waterboarding are advocated as a very rarely used but unfortunately sometimers necessary in the prevention of terrorism and protection of national security. Advocates of it such as former Vice-President Dick Cheney or the former Director of the Joint Intelligence Group at Guantanamo Bay detention camp, whilst being decried as torture by others such a Dame Stella Rimington. In the past, the United Nations has joined those speaking out against these techiques but is it time to rethink this assement? Could these techniques, one day, help save millions?
