Economic and Social
Here are the four topics that we are going to debate in the human rights committee:-
IMF Governance Reform is the basis for our introductory debate, for which you do not need to submit position papers or write draft resolutions. This being said, it is still important that you know where your country stands in relation to the issue of their own and th representation of other countries in the governanance of the IMF.
Brain Drain with much focus on financial regulation and technical macroeconomic issues it is easy to loose track abof the essence of economics - the decisions surrounding how scarce resource should be used. An imprtant resource is found in trained people and in a globalised world thesepeople tend to migrate to maximise their own welfare but should there be restrictions on this as developing countries face a brain drain?
Global Fiscal Harmonsiation this is not as scary as it sounds think tax havens and stimulus packages and try and work out whether your country would favour a global approach to tavckling the current economic problem or whetherit would rather protect its autonomy and sovereignty. Let your imagination run wild - new institutions with funny acronyms will be appreciated.
Trade is the source of prosperity for all say some, the means of the rich exploiting and oppressing the poor claims others. Should the international community do more to promote liberalised trade or has the world reached a critical point where the gains from free trade are outweighed by increased volatility? Furthermore trade is not exclusively the concern of those doing the trading and in a highly interconnected world is there need for aUN body to intervene to overcome externalities like climate change, macroeconomic instability and a whole host of other problems?
The Economist is in our opinion the best source of accessable information on issues of international politics and is a great starting point for research but beyound this try to tailor your research around your country and not be influenced by biased sources, the key to success in MUN is effectively representing and arguing for a country that may not share your beliefs.
Looking forward to meeting you,
Joe and Callum
